Equipment Upgrades! NOW Is the Time!!

Boat show season can be a smart time to take stock of your gear and decide what is worth upgrading. Today I run through both big-ticket improvements and smaller replacement items, including self-tailing winches, electronics, inflatable PFDs, solar setups, dinghies, foul-weather gear, first-aid supplies, running rigging and spare parts. We also discuss comfort items that can simply make time aboard more enjoyable. Rather than upgrading for the sake of having something new, the episode is a useful prompt to review what is worn, outdated or genuinely limiting your sailing. Use it as a practical starting point for building your own prioritized equipment list.

There’s nothing quite like the start of a sailing season to get us thinking about all the things we’d like to change, replace or improve on our boats. But when it comes to equipment upgrades, earlier is almost always better. In Episode 82, I’m talking about getting ahead of those upgrades rather than waiting until the week before launch—or worse, discovering halfway through the season that something you’ve been meaning to replace has finally given up.
Start by taking an honest look around the boat. What frustrated you last season? What equipment is becoming unreliable? Is there something that would make sailing easier, safer or simply more enjoyable? Maybe it’s time for new running rigging, updated electronics, a better anchoring setup, improved safety equipment or one of those comfort upgrades you’ve been talking about for years. I like to separate the “need to do” projects from the “would be nice” projects and tackle the important ones first.
Planning early also gives you time to do some research rather than buying the first solution you find. Marine equipment can be expensive, and upgrading one component can sometimes have a domino effect. A new piece of electronics may require different wiring, additional power or changes to your existing network. New sails or rigging might mean measurements need to be taken and components ordered. Even relatively simple upgrades can take longer than expected once we start digging into them.
And don’t forget about installation. If you’re comfortable doing the work yourself, give yourself enough time to complete the project properly—and to deal with the inevitable surprise that appears once you open something up. If you need professional help, marine technicians, riggers, sailmakers and other trades can become extremely busy as launch season approaches. Getting onto their schedule early can mean the difference between enjoying your upgrade from the beginning of the season and spending the first few weeks waiting for it.
The goal isn’t to turn your boat into an endless list of projects. It’s actually the opposite. A little planning now means more time sailing later. Decide what really needs your attention, make a realistic upgrade list and start working through it before the season gets underway. Your future sailing self will be very happy you did.
